About Us

Literacy and Academic Success Team

Strong reading skills are essential to a student's

success in virtually all areas of learning. Members generally work side-by-side at a local elementary school. Their goal: help students become enthusiastic and successful readers.

Building on the overwhelming success of the Reading Project

over the previous three years, RSC decided to be the first in the state

(and perhaps country) to pilot a Math Corps program (September 2000).

Components included in-class and small group tutoring, Family Math

Nights and more!

In 2005-06, we decided to blend the Math Tutor and Reading Tutor positions into a single role. This will provide much needed support for students and schools and recognizes the powerful role that reading plays in math. The Literacy Tutor assignment also provides a much richer service experience for our AmeriCorps members.

Traffic Safety Task Force

Cooper's Corner is an educational interactive bicycle and pedestrian safety exhibit that impacts and empowers children ages 0 to 12 years of age. While visiting Cooper's Corner, children learn how to be safe minded, whether they are riding in a motor vehicle, riding a bike, or simply crossing the street. The exhibit addresses topics such

as how to properly wear a seatbelt, the importance of bike helmets, learning and using hand signals, the proper way to safely cross the street and dialing 911.

Juvenile Justice Center

Each year, more than 800 truancy petitions are filed by schools in Benton and Franklin counties. Truancy is a significant issue in our community and is a gateway behavior that can lead to criminal behavior, substance abuse, teen pregnancy and poverty. Members help by working directly with students, their families, and schools to increase attendance, attachment and achievement in school.

Civic Engagement

In partnership with the Mid-Columbia Library System, this position

supports exciting activities and volunteer programs designed to get the whole community connected to the wonderful resources our libraries have to offer.

In 2005, RSC developed Project Literacy, a reading tutor program for our local elementary schools. The goal was to bring volunteers into the schools to assist emergent readers. In partnership with Pasco Schools, you can provide leadership to this important volunteer engagement effort.

Emergency Preparedness

Building strong communities means helping citizens to be prepared.

Join us as we support governmental and faith-based organizations

in their efforts to organize, train and prepare people for homeland

security disasters or emergencies. RSC members come to understand

the importance of services and activities conducted by emergency services providers and then function in an essential role in testing emergency plans and procedures in realistic environments during one to three emergency drills conducted annually.
